"Anne are you packing your things for the night? You said Suzy was expecting you over at six."
Radiant stood in the kitchen of her apartment stacking the dishes from supper in the sink to let them soak in the soapy water. Her daughter was, in theory, gathering all the things she needed for a sleepover with one of her friends from school. Three of the girls and their parents had agreed on a summer rotation of sleepovers that gave the parents a free night most weeks and the girls a fun group activity to look forward to throughout the summer.

"Yes Mommy!" came the call back from the hall.
"And you're bringing your toothbrush?" It was less a question than a statement.
The reply came more slowly this time, 'Yeeeess." Radiant had no idea what the girl had against brushing her teeth, but it seemed to be a constant struggle to ensure Anne's dental hygene.
"Let me get it for you sweety." She dried her hands on her pants andwent to fetch the toothbrush and a travel tube of toothpaste from the bathroom...

*****

"Thanks a bunch Allen, say hi to Sam for me when she gets home." she bent down to kiss Anne on the forehead. It had turned out that Samantha Grant was of Mu decent and Radiant had been part of a team of Heroes who had rescued her and her daughter Suzy from the Circle ofThorns some months ago. Radiant hadn't given it a second thought until they had met during parent/teacher interviews. It had been a little embaressing when a complete stranger had started hugging and thanking her in the middle of the school but once Sam had regained her composure they had discovered that their daughters had been friends for almost four months already. Allen Grant's reaction had been one of quiet, unconditonal support for the Hero who had returned his wife and daughter to him.

Leaving the Grants apartment she made for the elevator and waited for the door to close before wormholing her way to the Citadel.

*****

Four different sets of eyes had watched Radiant and Anne as they made their way out of the Alliance Arms, and by the time they had reached the apratment building where the Grants lived the Council intelligence machine had deduced what their destination was and relayed this information to its people in the field.

Dirge of Despair looked at his watch and then down at his cellphone smiling at the text message there. Radiant and the girl had been inside for twenty minutes now.

"Keep an eye on the doors here and at the Arms. She's probably dropped the girl off for the night, but we can't spoil things with impatience just yet."

Dirge looked at his watch again, it read 8:45pm. Hess had been reported as being present in the Vanguard compound an hour ago, no confirmed sighting of Clemens yet but he wouldn't be far behind. He sighed to himself and gave the order to go ahead.

So much for his window of opportunity.

The wormhole swirled open just infront of the Grants livingroom window, on the couch sat three nine-year old girls who had just been interrupted in the middle of a giggle session. The three of them gaped as three men, all in street clothing stepped out of the wormhole.

"We're kidnapping a slumber party?" one of them asked
"Don't underestimate their value yet." said another, apparently the leader, "Go find the parents."
"Umm, excuse me?" Suzy stood up and put her hands on her hips, "What are you doing in my parents house?!"
Dirge gave her an amused look and gestured for the other two men to proceed.
"Hey!" She glared at them with all the boldness of a child who was being ignored, "My dad is going to be super mad. You'd better leave now or he'll call the cops!"
Sounds of angry protest soon heralded the arrival of Allen and Samantha Grant, dressed for bed and escorted by the two men who had accompanied Dirge.
"We don't want any trouble." Allen was saying, "Just take what you want and go, we don't want anyone to get hurt."
"Excellent!" Dirge clapped his hands and a fresh wormhole swirled open,"If you'd all care to enter in single file then we can do this quickly and easily as per your request."
There was a chorus of protest from all save Anne who just gave each of the men an apprasing look.
"If you prefer we can start hurting people? Women and children first, as they say?" the soft sound of his cronies readying pistols punctuated his words dramatically.
"You won't get away with this..." Allen started.
"I figure my odds are better than fifty percent." Dirge replied with a smile.

Dirge of Despair was perched on one of the piers in Independence Port chewing on a hotdog and watching a team of Heroes try to subdue Lusca when his phone rang. Checking the number her swallowed his mouthful and answered.

"Ms. MacTagart, you seem to have missed the opening scene."
"Yes. That was me I wish I could have seen the look on her face."
"No I assure you they are quite safe."
He paused and frowned at the phone
"Why is that? You don't trust them to my tender mercies?"
Another long pause.
"Oh very well. If that's what it will take to secure your continued co-operation then I'll hand them over to you as soon as I can secure transport to the Isles. How are your preparations coming along?"
"Well I look forward to seeing the results then."

He closed the phone and tucked it away thoughtfully. Tossing the remains of his hotdog into the water he stood and walked towards the tram, MacTagart was altogether too sure of her superiority for his tastes but it looked like he might be able to shuffle any fallout from this to Dervish with a little care...

*****

He settled himself on a bench in Brickstown next to a man in plain clothing who had been reading a newspaper for the better part of an hour.

"Anything good in the paper today?"
The man looked up and nodded slightly in recognition, "Not really, it seems pretty quiet. The home team is playing though."
"Are they now?" Dirge smiled and stood up, looking across the street idly at the building where Margaret Lee Jesska lived, "I may have to go see them..."

Dirge of Despair stood at ease in the office of Archon Landry, his preferred suit replaced by the black and purple of his uniform. The look that the Archon was giving him gave an impression that his life was about to get more annoying.

"Tell me again Adjudant Krause why you propose to give up valuable hostages, hostages you argued would give the Council an advantage against the Reciprocators?"
"We would not be giving them up sir." it took a lot of effort to keep the loathing out of his voice, but he thought that he did an admirable job, "We would be giving them over to the care of the Free Agents. I will still have free access to them and should it be required the Council can take them back with little effort."
"And you need exclusive use of a ship to move them?"
"Yes Sir. So far they still don't know whose possesion they are in. I'd like to limit their knowledge as much as possible, plus this would free up the holding facility they are currently occupying for my next target."
"Oh? Do tell." Landry leaned back in his chair, giving an excellent impression of a man about to say 'No.' to whatever request you might be about to make.
"I'd like to continue to harass the Reciprocators. Their active numbers are fairly low right now and my actions will draw their attention away from Council activities. The longer that they remain unaware of me and my affiliations, the better. I propose to take one of their unpowered members next, I've already prepared a shortlist."
"You want to hold a member of the Reciprocators?"
"Yes Sir, tho--"
"In a Council facility?"
"Unmarked facility..."
"Denied."
"It would only need to be for a short time until I can find a third party to ho--"
"Denied Adjudant."
"Sir." he stressed the word, aggrivation plain on his face, "They have already had too much time to start tracking the girl. I need them offbalance. I need their attention divided. This is the best way to doit without screaming 'Council Plot'."
"Your plan. Which you say you cannot share with me in full due to orders from your superiors within the Galaxy Division. The same superiors who will not allow you use of any of their facilities or personnelle?"
"The Vortex and Penumbra are better equipped for this sort of work!"
"Denied Adjudant. Your hostages will be relocated to a facility on the Isles when our next regular transport leaves, you can try and convince someone there if you like. As far as taking an actual active member ofthe Reciprocators. I will assign you support staff contingent on your finding a place to hold them that doesn't involve any of my facilities."

Dirge looked at the other man for a long moment and debated killing him. Landry was a Cor Leonis modified super soldier, so he stood a head taller than Dirge and could probably bench the desk he sat behindwithout breaking a sweat. Not that that would stop the Dirge of Despair, but it was highly likely that he would be a suspect if Landry turned up dead in his own office after their meeting.

"Is that all Adjudant?" Landry stressed the rank.
"Yes Sir." Dirge responded in kind
"The you are dismissed."

Dirge left the building fuming as he began running through locations where he could hold a registered Hero without attracting too much attention...

Dirge of Despair strolled off the ferry and onto the docks of Cap auDiable, smiling around at the crowd as he tried to pick out the pair hewas looking for. Moving forward at an easy pace he cleared the docksand examined the area. Haven had seen better days having lostprominance to first New Haven and more recently Aeon City, thecommunity had a rundown slightly desperate feel that he enjoyed
immensely.

Aftera few minutes of searching he spotted the figure of Hackin' Hank, themale half of the duo known as the Sunder Twins, leaning against aconcrete barricade. He watched for a minute, looking around for hissister and was rewarded for his patience by the arrival of GrinningLiz, grinning to himself as the siblings immediately began to argueover something he approached the pair.

"Hackin' Hank and Grinning Liz, a pleasure to meet you both."
They stopped and turned to look at him. "You lookin' Mister?" "We don't normally double team customers."
"Shutup Liz! I'm working here!" "You shutup and let the man talk!"
Dirge just looked between them, "I was actually wondering if you two would like an all expenses payed trip to Paragon City?"
"Whats the job?" Hank smacked her on the back of the head, "Quiet Liz! Men are talkin'! So whats the job?"
"I need you to break something to me. An antenna, it'll be on the roof of this building in Brickstown." He produced a photo of one of the towering skyscrapers in northern Brickstown.
"Do we get to kill anyone?"
"It is not required. But I'm not against it either."
"That'll cost extra then."
Dirge raised an eyebrow.
"I didn't know we was supposed to charge for that." Liz looked at her brother, "'S called negotiation." He replied confidently.
"And why does it cost extra if I /don't/ want you to kill anyone?"
"'S boring!" "Means we hav' t' be sneaky."
"Thats not being sneaky. It not being a sociopath for ten minutes."
"Still costs extra!"
Herolled his eyes until a thought struck him, "How would you feel abouttaking care of a Cape for me while you're there? A man who goes by'The Subtractor'"

He could see their eyes light up at that, "A good one? Not just some pansy now?" "Aww its a guy? You can have him Liz."
"Excellent. I'll get you a photo, he's had to miss in a crowd."
"How much will this pay anyway?" Liz boxed her brother ears, "Let the man talk! How much /will/ it pay though?'

Dirgesmiled, "Assuming you only have one vice to sink your money into. Enough so that you won't have to hang out on a street corner for acouple of months."
"So a couple 'o weeks then? Not bad!"
"When we leave then?"
"Therewill be a boat waiting for you in Port Oakes tommorrow morning. Youleave as soon as you can get there, I will leave more instructons foryou with the crew."
"How much in advance?"
"Advance? Hmmm... How about a quarter?"
Hank smiled, "I'm more partial to a third I think." "I thought a quarter was bigger than a third?"

Dirge sighed inwardly as the siblings began to argue over which was more, a quarter or a third.
"It will be one quarter, and I expect all of my crew to make it to Paragon alive and in one piece."
"That'll cost extra."
"No it won't. They will arrive unharmed, I'm sure you can contain yourselves for the duration of the trip."
"What if we don't want your job?"
Dirge smirked, "Oh you'll take it. Unless you have other offers lined up here, and if this one goes well there will be more work in Paragon before long."

"Thanks for helping me out there guys. Jess I may need you to help me with this stuff
some more, its all pretty technical." Yuki was finishing over the comms.

Radiant checked her watch and slumped down on the couch in her office checking her
phone, she shifted back to her street clothing without even really thinking about it.

"Of course dear. Any time you need us." That was Beth, always understanding. Always
willing to help.

"Sure thing Yuki, I'm just going to head home and have a bath I think." Jess was field
testing a new armour. So far things looked good, it had gone toe to toe with Zenith
Warcrys and come out on top. Though it seemed to be a little more difficut to get out of...

"Did you go like an Astronaut?" Beth sounded curious.

A short silence followed that before Jess replied with an emphatic, "NO."

"I'm going to have a bath and change, then I'll head back to the Citadel."

Some comm chatter flitted back and forth, Sean and Ani talking before they settled down
somewhere in person. Yuki and Beth bantered, probably whle yuki looked through the
files they'd just recovered. She almost jumped when her cell rang.

"I need to go off comms for a minute guys, phone."

She pulled out her earpiece and answered, "Anne?"

"Mommy! A man in dark glasses just told me to call you, the Red Haired Lady didn't let
me call sooner because we were moving. I saw a big pyramid thing...

The two of them had their conversation cut short after only a few minutes, during that
time Radiant missed four soft 'twip' sounds just before Jess' comm went dead and the
communications center reporting contact lost with the entirety of the Brickstown district.

Radiant waslked out into the commons room stil holding her phone absently.
Sean and Ani were there, conversation apparently interrupted by the events
over the comms. Sean looked distracted, like he was looking through Ani at
something just behind him. Ani looked agitated as he tapped at his wrist
display.

"Wasn't she just going for a bath? She's probably off comms." She spoke into
her comm and looked at the pair.

"Umm Maybe our relay needs to be repaired? The communications center has
a big red mark over Brickstown." Beth sounded unsure.

"She didn't answer my text... I'll send her another one.." Ani sounded distant,
even to Radiant and she was in the same room.

"I'll call her house, just a sec." Yuki volunteered.

Radiant looked down at her phone, shuffled her feet, fidgeted, looked at Ani
and waited for a responce.

Nothing.

"She'd still not responding.." Ani looked and sounded like e was concentrating
hard, fingers twiching absently.

"She didn't answer her phone either..."

"I'll go run and just have a look? Maybe she cn't hear them over some music or
something?" Beth was already moving by the time anyone could acknowledge
the idea.

Radiant went to the comms center, Yuki was already there pacing. A display
screen showed a map of the city, brickstown was redded out and a message
flashed in the corner.

Coverage Lost: Brickstown District.

And below that.

Signal Lost: Reciprocator - Black Starbeam, Primary Tier
Signal Lost: Reciprocator - Cyberette, Tertiery Tier.

"Do you know know more about this thing Kit? I can't tell why we lost comms."
Yuki stopped pacing to watch Radiant tap at the console and set the system to
diagnostic.

"I'm ente--" Beths transmission ended in static and a new alert appeared on
the screen.

Signal Lost: Reciprocator - Static Bolter, Primary Tier

"It doesn't look like a system error..." Radiant frowned and spoke into her comm,
" Resistance can you go check the Brickstown comms relay for maintance and
repairs?"

"At once Miss Kitsuki." The robot replied.

"She's not home any more... She's moving east... fast." Ani's voice was agitated
now.

"Maybe she headed out again? With comms down in the area..." Yuki stopped
pacing again long enough to look up at the communications board.

"Its too fast..." Ani was on the move, eir comm signal flicked from the Citadel to
Steel Canyon on the display followed by Sean's.

Yuki and Radiant looked at each other for a moment before the younger girl made
for the teleporters. Radiant looked back up at the board.

"She's moving faster than she could on her own, all her suits are back in the
Citadel..." eir voice faded as if Ani wasn't quite talking into the mic, "She's
zigzagging, the pattern for her movement doesn't make any sense..."

"-lo? Hello? Can anyone hear me now?" Beth's voice broke into whatever Ani was
saying.

"We hear you Beth." Radiant watched as the comms board placed Bolty's signal in
Independance Port and moving fast.

"What did you find?" Yuki didn't bother to hide her concern.

"Well Jess wasn't home. I found her comm on the counter and she hadn't run a bath.
Oh and she has a new broken window, which isn't normal."

A short silence fell over the comm.

"Ani's tracking her now, we're just not sure where she's going." Radiant drummed
her fingers against the console and looked down at her phone again.

"Eastgate... She's somewhere in the Hollows..." Ani's voice was still distant and
sounded strained.

"Hollows? Why would Jess go to the Hollows?" Beth sounded confused

"Without a suit?" Yuki was dubious

"Why would someone take her to the Hollows might be more like." Sean said what
everyone else didn't want to think about.

Radiant stuffed her phone into a pocket. The first wormhole took her to the teleporter
linked to the Hollows, a step throught that and the second wormhole took her to the
heart of Outcast territory. 'Wait for me Anne.' She thought to herself.

Sidle waited.

Her Mistress had asked that she come to this place and take the woman
who lived here. Sidle had watched as her Mistress had spoken to the
man in dark glasses,he had asked that she do this thing for him, that
he wanted to sow doubt and fear among these Reciprocators by targeting
those close to them. The man was wrong, everything about him was wrong.
She had told her Mistress as much later, but he had made no move to
disturb the peace and so she left him alone and watched as they spoke
and reached an agreement.

And so she waited.

She had been informed that her target had left home some hours earlier,
slipping into the unattended house has been beyond simple and a quick
examination had revealed nothing to overtly link her quarry to the Heroes
this was intended to strike at. Understandable, it would be silly and
dangerous to leave leave blatant evidence that you were the personal
technician for Cyberette lying around the house.

Time passed and Sidle let her eyes close, confident that she would hear
and smell her target as soon as she arrived. Her patiance was rewarded
early in the evening when the locks rattled and the opened and then closed
again as Margret returned home. She was talking on a headset, apparently
displeased with whoever was on the other end judging by her tone of voice.
The woman made heer way into the kitchen and dropped her keys on the
counter, Sidle slipped in behind her.

Four soft 'twip' sounds announced the darts that fired from the launcher
attached to her wrist and Sidle caught the falling woman with unnatural
grace. Swift, sure movements saw them both out of the house and bound
eastward.

Brickstown was riddled with tunnels, some leading downwards, some leading
to scattered secret facilities or rare routes into the Ziggursky penitentary.
Many linked up with the city sewers and that was Sidle's route of to deliver
her cargo, it was also where she met up with the other. The other woman,
if that's what she was, stood waiting as if she had been expecting Sidle and
fell into step behind her. The strangers face was a horrible rotten mess,
her features twisted into something obviously not her own.

Sidle didn't care. She had not been told that there would be anyone
waiting to met her before dropping off her cargo, but so long as this one
did not interfere it made no difference.

She kept a punishing pace through the sewers as she moved through the city,
her path wavering and swerving through the winding tunnels until they broke
back into rough hewn tunnels. Unerringly she threaded her way through them
at speed with the stranger in tow, only slowing when they reached the
correct junction. A group of Trolls stood waiting for them, the Gardvord in
charge stepped forward.

"You work for Smoke Man?"

Sidle merely set the unconcious Margret down and said, "I am to deliver her."
before setting off down a different tunnel.

The Gardvord looked at the unconsious woman and growled an order to another
Troll. None of them noticed the other female figure that shadowed the group back
to their caves.
